Robberies: Delta Poly students abandon hostels

Students of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area, are fleeing their off-campus hostels following a series of attacks by suspected armed robbers.

According to reports from residents, numerous hostels have been deserted by terrified students due to the escalating assaults by hoodlums.

Survivors of the robbery attacks have reportedly been robbed of their valuables, including laptops, phones, and personal belongings.

Additionally, the assailants have forced students into transferring money to their (robbers’) accounts.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the wave of robbery incidents initially began a few weeks ago in a neighboring community where many students reside, before spreading to various parts of Ogwashi-Uku town.

Despite initial rumors of the school being shut down in response to the attacks, the Delta State Police Command clarified that this was not the case.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, stated, “The school was not shut down. The students are on a yearly mid-term break.”

In response to the security threat, authorities say they have intensified security measures to restore peace in the community.

Edafe confirmed, “As of Saturday, the Area Commander of Ogwashi-Uku and the Divisional Police Officer were at the office of the Commissioner of Police.

“The Commissioner of Police has deployed more personnel to ensure that such incidents do not reoccur.”
