Safety tips for elevator rides

Elevators are one of the safest forms of movement, but the unexpected could happen as was the case with Dr Vwaere Diaso, who plunged to death in a malfnctioning elevator at the General Hospital Odan, Lagos State.

However, following simple guidelines can help prevent unforeseeable circumstances. Hence, it is important to not only know how to properly ride an elevator but to also know what to do when it becomes stalled.

Below are some safety tips to note when waiting for an elevator, when riding, and exiting; as well as what to do when there is an emergency:

When waiting for an elevator

  • While waiting for the elevator, stand away from the doors because someone may be exiting at that floor, and you should always let them exit before you attempt to board.
  • If possible, ask people around if the elevator malfunctions while waiting.
  • Know your destination and push the elevator call button once for the direction you want to go in.
  • If the arriving car is full, wait for the next car. Don’t try to maneuver in or stop closing doors.
  • You should use the stairs in case of a fire incident or other condition that could lead to a disruption in electrical services.

When boarding an elevator

  • Watch the direction of the moving step and step on and off with extra care.
  • Watch your step because the elevator car may not be at the same level with the floor.
  • Hold small packages firmly in one hand, but always leave one hand available to hold the handrail.
  • Grasp the handle as you step onto the moving step.
  • Stand next to the elevator wall, if available.
  • If the doors do not open when the elevator stops, push the door open button.

When exiting an elevator

  • Ensure that you exit when you get to your floor.
  • Do not push the people in front of you when exiting.
  • Watch your step so you do not miss your step.
  • In the event of an elevator emergency
  • If the elevator should ever stop between floors, do not panic.
  • Never climb out of a stalled elevator.
  • Use the alarm or help button, the telephone or the intercom to call for assistance.
  • Make sure you get help from a qualified person as soon as possible.
  • Do not try to leave an elevator that has not stopped normally.
  • In case of a power failure, emergency lighting will come on
