A 43-year-old-teacher, David Yusuf, was on Tuesday brought before the authorities for allegedly subjecting a female student to physical harm.
He was brought before a Wuse Zone ll Magistrate’s Court in Abuja.
The teacher, a casual staff member at Government Girls College, Kuje, FCT, was charged with two counts related to causing unprovoked harm and assault to the student. However, he entered a plea of not guilty.
The case was originally reported to the Kuje Divisional Police Headquarters and was subsequently transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department in FCT for further enquiry.
The complainant came from Henry lortim, a resident of Union Homes Estate, Kuje, who alleged that his 16-year-old-daughter, a student at the college, was assaulted by Yusuf on June 2, 2023.
During a night study session, it was claimed that Yusuf used an iron rod to flog the young girl, causing injuries to her hand and other parts of her body. These actions led to the charges filed against him in violations of Sections 241 and 326 of the Penal Code.
Magistrate Abdulmajid Oniyangi granted the defendant bail in the amount of N2m provided that two sureties with similar amounts were to vouch for him, and they must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.
The court’s registrar will also verify the addresses of these sureties before the defendant’s release.
The case is rescheduled to be heard on November 6 during which the prosecuting counsel with present witnesses.
