Three nabbed for robbing accident victims

The Lagos State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad says it has arrested three suspects for stealing two iPhones from victims of a road accident in Ikeja area of the state. The incident happened on Wednesday, Police say.

In a statement on X.com on Thursday [today], the RRS disclosed that the suspects were apprehended a few meters from the scene of the accident while attempting to flee with the stolen items.

The statement reads, “Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad last night arrested three suspected thieves for stealing two phones from accident victims on Governor’s Road, Alausa, Ikeja.

“The suspects: Isaiah Adegbenro (38), Edet Johnson (30), and Efe Sowemimo (28) were arrested a few meters away from the accident scene while trying to escape with the phones.

“The accident victims were travelling towards Ikeja in a red Toyota Camry 2010 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a road divider in front of the Adeyemi Bero end of Governor’s Road, Alausa, Ikeja.”

Instead of assisting the injured occupants, the three suspects were allegedly seen ransacking the vehicle and the victims’ pockets.

They reportedly made off with an iPhone 15 valued at N1,300,000, and an iPhone 12, worth N620,000.

The suspects were arrested when RRS operatives patrolling the area pursued them after receiving a tip-off about the theft and recovered the two iPhones from their pockets.

The statement added, “The operatives assisted the victims to the hospital and also removed the vehicle to clear the obstruction.

“The suspects have made significant confessions. They are to be charged to court today in line with the directives of the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), CSP Shola Jejeloye.”
