Philip Shaibu and Oba of Benin are trending on X (formerly Twitter) in relation to how Governor Godwin Obaseki contributed to his party’s loss in the just-concluded governorship election in Edo State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Senator Monday Okpebholo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the Saturday governorship election in Edo.
INEC’s Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Faruk Kuta, announced the winner on Sunday in Benin after the collation of results from 18 local government areas in the state.
Okpebholo polled 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 247,274 votes; while the candidate of Labour Party (LP), Olumide Akpata, came third with 22,763 votes.
Announcing the winner, Kuta said, “That Okpebholo Monday of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared winner and hereby returned elected.”
A breakdown of the results shows that APC won in 11 local governments, while PDP won in seven.
In reaction to the outcome of the election, netizens on X offered reasons for why they believe PDP won. See some of the reasons and reactions:

Apparently his weakness is not being able to control his emotions. He sees every criticism as dislike for his person, so he went to war. I doubt, it will be different outside the political environment.

If he is actually Godwin, he would have acted differently. But I think he unfortunately devolved into GOGwin. His wife isn’t among the women of understanding!

Very unfortunate human being… He failed to learn any lesson and it came to him in karma…

If Obaseki lost his LG, it’s like he read “The 48 Laws of Power” backward—straight to ‘How to Lose Everything in 10 Easy Steps!’ Even Aristotle would be like, ‘Bro, that’s not leadership. That’s a masterclass in how to drop the ball!
Oshobaba go don read 48 laws of power well😂 pic.twitter.com/KR8L2MfMMH

To those who claim Elu P’s Akpata would reduce PDP’s chance, do yourself a favour by adding LP’s figures to Obaseki’s Asue. We’ve always told you elections ain’t won on social media. Not even loquacious Aisha could get more than 4 votes. As for Obaseki- the MOU master, EFCC calls pic.twitter.com/6dqzu9fBhT
