A magistrates’ court was confused when a divorce-seeking woman, Taibat Abubakar, told the sitting in Ipata, Ilọrin, Kwara State, that she was still dismayed at how she got pregnant without sexual intercourse with her husband.
Abubakar and her husband, Salihu, had approached the court over a divorce suit filed by the wife.
The divorce-seeking woman told the court: “He said I should marry him, but I said no because I don’t love him. But he insisted and said whether I liked it or not, I had no choice over his proposal.
“Then, suddenly, he called me one day, saying that I am pregnant for him and that I must not abort it.
“Though surprised, I didn’t take it seriously until I didn’t see my period at the end of the month without having sex with him.
“He paid my dowry and I have had a child for him, but I don’t love him anymore.”
Abubakar, however, told the court that her husband, following the divorce, must pay N10,000 for feeding the child. She also pleaded with the court to order the ex-husband to pay the child’s school fees.
In sharp contrast, Salihu denied the allegations by his wife, insisting that the duo had sex before she got pregnant with their child.
He said, “We consciously had physical sex and not in a dream or in the spiritual realm as she has said.”
The Magistrate, Ajibade Lawal, told the couple to maintain the status quo until the next adjourned date of July 25.
