In a case that has sent shock waves through the community, Maya Porche Ozuem found herself behind bars after allegedly perpetrating a N1.4m osusu (contribution) scam.
The incident unfolded on Friday, September 27th, 2023, when Maya was apprehended and subsequently remanded in Prison.
According to information, Maya’s modus operandi allegedly involved the creation of a fictitious WhatsApp Osusu Group designed to deceive unsuspecting victims.
Within this group, she was reported to have fabricated names and numbers, while also falsely asserting that individuals were making legitimate contributions to the osusu scheme.
Unbeknownst to her victims, the only contributor was the very person she had duped, who believed the osusu to be genuine.
As the time approached for the victim to collect his N1.4m, Maya was unable to pay. This is even as had been linked to previous scams and had been known for same in the Sapele and Warri regions.
The Police apprehended Maya on Monday of the preceding week after she was reportedly lured to Koko Garage in Sapele, where she had been promised N300,000 contribution.
Following four days in custody, Maya was officially remanded in prison on Friday, based on her victim’s insistence on recovering his funds.
The case has since been referred to the court.
On her social media platform, Maya operated under the alias “Audrey Andrea.” According to a victim, Maya and her baby’s father were allegedly complicit in these fraudulent activities.
As of the latest update, Maya is incarcerated at the Benin Prison along the Benin-Sapele Road, also called the White House, where she will remain until October 27, 2023 when he case is expected to come up for hearing.
