A new report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) says about 122 million girls across the globe still lack access to education.
No less than 50 per cent of the affected population are domiciled in sub-Saharan Africa, the UN agency says.
According to the Factsheet issued by the United Nations Global Education Monitoring Report, significant progress on girl child education has been made since 2015 with over 50 million girls enrolling in school.
It, however, says that much of the progress recorded in the last eight years cannot be attributed to Africa, as the continent remains the region where young women face the largest disadvantage.
“Nigeria and other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa need to invest more to achieve its girl child education target for the girl child ahead of 2030,” UNESCO counsels.
“A new calculation by the United Nations Global Education Monitoring Report reveals that significant progress at the global level has been made since 2015 with over 50 million girls enrolling in school.
“However, the exception to this success includes sub-Saharan Africa, where girls remain far less likely to go to school at any education level,” it adds.
