Tragedy struck at Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja as two students, Bilikisu Eleojo, 20, and Ibrahim Haliru died after inhaling fumes from a nearby generator while sleeping.
The generator was said to have been placed close to their apartment window, leading to carbon monoxide poisoning overnight.
Their bodies were discovered by neighbors early Thursday morning.
Another student, Mercy Ojochegbe, who was also in the room, was found unconscious and rushed to the hospital.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, had confirmed the incident to newsmen.
Aya said, “The three students were sleeping in their room while a generating set was switched on close to the window of their apartment. They inhaled carbon monoxide as a result of the generating set that was switched on.
“Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo, and Ibrahim Haliru were already dead when neighbours discovered the sad incident in the morning, while Mercy Ojochegbe, who was still breathing,was immediately rushed to the hospital.”
The Police spokesperson noted that the incident was reported at the ‘B’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force Lokoja and that investigations are ongoing.
He urged residents to always be safety conscious to avert carbon monoxide poisoning in their homes.
