AFCON semi-finals: Sanwo-Olu sets up mega viewing centre

The Lagos State Government has set up a mega viewing centre for the Super Eagles/Bafana Bafana match scheduled for [Wednesday] today, February 7.

With 25 viewing centers spread across the state, the government aims to encourage Lagosians of all ages to enjoy the excitement and camaraderie of football, a sport that unites people from all walks of life.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) commenced on January 13, 2024, and Nigeria has maintained an unbeaten record thus far.

Designated as the Mega Viewing Centre, the Onikan Stadium, now known as Mobolaji Johnson Arena, will host the match, kicking off at 6pm today.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso in a statement highlighted Lagos State’s status as the sports capital and the home of fervent Super Eagles supporters.

While Governor Sanwo-Olu prioritized providing fans with the opportunity to watch the match together; he expressed optimism that the national team will triumph; emphasising their demonstrated capacity and technical prowess.

He reminded of Nigeria’s illustrious history in the AFCON tournament, having been crowned champions three times, finishing as runners-up on four occasions, and securing third place eight times.

In addition to the Mega Viewing Centre at Onikan, other viewing centers are situated in Agege Stadium, Abesan Sports Centre, Alimosho LGA Secretariat, Agbado-Oke Odo LCDA Secretariat, L.A. Primary School, Layeni, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Anglican Primary School, Aradagun, Badagry.

Other locations are: New Road Primary School, Ajegunle, Femi Gbajabiamila Mini Stadium, Coker-Aguda, Surulere, Epe Recreation Centre, Sprite Court, Festac, Igando-Ikotun LCDA Secretariat, Onisabe of Igbobi’s Palace, Jibowu, Alajede’s Palace, Ijede, Oba’s Palace, Ijegun, Ikorodu Town Hall, APC Party Secretariat, Ketu.

Also listed as viewing centres are Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos, Lagos House Car Park, Marina, Mushin Public Library, YMD Garden, Ojo, Olera Football Pitch, Ojokoro Housing Estate, Afolabi Primary School, Oshodi, Papa Playing Field, Oworonsoki and Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba.
