The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, says based on the outcome of his meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU], National Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions alongside some top government functionaries, the Federal Government wishes to begin a new chapter that will ensure the fulfilment of all the promises made to the university workers.
The minister said the a committee on the matter is dedicated to addressing the outstanding issues and long-standing concerns from the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and university-based unions, particularly #ASUU, #SSANU, and #NASU.

Last Friday, I facilitated a meeting with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi; and Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, Chairman of the Federal Government’s Negotiating Committee with academic and non-academic unions of our federal tertiary institutions. This committee is dedicated to addressing the outstanding issues and long-standing concerns from the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and university-based unions, particularly #ASUU, #SSANU, and #NASU.
The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu places education as a top priority, fully understanding its crucial role in strengthening our economy, preserving our values, and securing the future of our nation. The President is steadfast in his commitment to ensuring that all these cardinal values are fulfilled.
This is a renewed environment, and we urge the unions of our tertiary institutions to trust in our dedication to meet all our commitments as a government. Moving forward, our approach will be rooted in mutual trust and reasoned negotiations.
The Ministry of Education and the Government cherish our relationship with the unions and are fully committed to doing everything in our power to ensure that our children are kept in school, and that their educational progress is not disrupted or hindered by strikes.
The President has issued a clear mandate to all ministers involved in our education sector to prevent any further strike actions in our academic institutions. This is a directive that I, along with the Ministry of Education, are fully committed to upholding.
As I stated at SSANU’s 3rd Quadrennial National Delegates Conference on Wednesday, I urge the unions to place their trust in us and renew their faith in this administration. Alhaji Yayale Ahmed and his team will continue their negotiations with you in good faith, working towards an amicable solution for both parties.
