Amina Hassan, a young bride from Adamawa state, took a drastic step to end her unhappy marriage by allegedly setting her husband’s house on fire.
The 20-year-old woman, who hails from Shuware in Mubi North Local Government Area of the state, tied the knot with Muhammed Auwal about five weeks ago. However, she soon regretted her decision and wanted out of the marriage.
According to the young lady, she and Auwal had a pre-nuptial agreement that he would divorce her shortly after the wedding ceremony. But when she reminded him of their deal, he refused to honour it and instead allegedly started abusing her physically.
“I begged him to divorce me, but he refused. He beat me up and said he would never let me go. I was so angry and frustrated that I decided to burn down the house,” Amina reportedly confessed to the police.
According to the police spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, Amina had expressed her unwillingness to marry Auwal to her parents before the wedding. But they reportedly ignored her wishes and forced her to go ahead with the marriage, saying that they had already sent out invitation cards and could not back out.
