FG extends subsidised rice programme

The Federal Government says its subsidised rice programme has been extended and that it is selling 50kg bag of the commodity for ₦40,000 in states such as Lagos, Kano, and Borno.

This initiative aims to tackle food scarcity and ensure that vulnerable populations have access to essential staples, government said.

The sales, which began in Abuja, are part of a broader strategy to provide affordable food options for all Nigerians, the government added.

This is even as reports say that officials have faced challenges with public cooperation at sales locations.

Said one of the officials, “Many individuals have been difficult to manage, often blocking entry points and failing to adhere to sales protocols. This behavior has complicated the process and hindered the program’s effectiveness.”

“Nevertheless, the government remains committed to a smooth rollout of the programme in the newly included states.

“With the average market price for a 50kg bag of rice ranging between ₦80,000 and ₦90,000, the subsidized sale is a significant step towards alleviating the financial burden on low-income earners and ensuring that no Nigerian goes to bed hungry,” the government added.
