FG vows to use community radio to enhance democracy

The Federal Government has reiterated commitment to expand community radio as a tool to bolster Nigeria’s democracy.

This assurance was conveyed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, in a statement released on Tuesday to mark World Radio Day, celebrated annually on February 13th.

The theme for this year’s celebration titled, ‘Radio: A century informing, entertaining and educating,’ according to Idris reflects the remarkable achievement of radio as a means of communication and information for over 100 years, despite the advent of social media.

He underscored its pivotal role in shaping public opinion, fostering cultural unity, and providing a platform for diverse voices to be heard.

Acknowledging the radio’s essential role in Nigeria since 1933, Idris highlighted its effectiveness in disseminating government plans and programs to all levels of society, including rural areas.

He further emphasized the government’s commitment to reforming the process of establishing community radio stations to enhance reliability, efficiency, and affordability.

While Nigeria has 89 licensed community radio stations, the Minister disclosed plan by the FG to facilitate the emergence of more stations and strengthen existing ones.

Idris called for investments in community radio, citing its potential to strengthen democracy, promote social cohesion, and provide rural populations with access to credible information.

He mentioned that the FG intends to collaborate with UNESCO to drive reforms and enhance capacity-building in the radio sector while urging all radio stations to uphold journalistic ethics and principles, ensuring credibility and trustworthiness in their operations.

“As Nigeria celebrates with the rest of the world, I urge all radio stations, whether traditional or online, to be more responsible in their operations by adhering to the principles and ethics of broadcasting.

“Editorial functions, such as fact-checking, objectivity, and balance, must be ensured before news is released. We must uphold the credibility and trust associated with radio, which most Nigerians value highly.

Idris therefore congratulated radio listeners on World Radio Day, urging them to leverage radio as a tool for learning, growth, and advocacy. He also commended UNESCO for highlighting the invaluable contribution of radio to society.
