How 2022 flood affected Lagos families and farmers -NEMA

In its recent update, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has unveiled the persistent repercussions of the 2022 floods in Lagos State, shedding light on the ongoing challenges faced by 16,000 families and 6,000 farmers.

According to NEMA’s Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, in Lagos, the afterding, Lagos state, climate changemath of the flood continues to cast a long shadow, affecting various sectors of the economy.

This revelation comes in the wake of NEMA’s collaboration with the World Bank to bolster resilience and extract crucial lessons from the 2022 flood disaster.

Director-General, Alhaji Mustapha Ahmed emphasized the need for a comprehensive reassessment of strategies, urging a swift identification and bridging of gaps for a more effective response to such incidents.

The statement highlights the concerted efforts by NEMA, the 2022 floods had a lasting impact on thousands of families and farmers, causing the loss of seedlings and farm produce.

As part of their response, NEMA directed field offices, including the Lagos Territorial Office, to mitigate losses and strengthen the resilience of communities in preparation for the 2023 rainy season.

Remarkably, the latest data indicates a drastic reduction in losses during the 2023 season, even with a notable increase in rainfall. NEMA attributes this success to proactive measures taken in the aftermath of the 2022 floods.

Expressing gratitude, the NEMA boss extended appreciation to the Lagos State government for their ongoing synergy and partnership, underscoring the crucial role of collaborative efforts in addressing the evolving challenges posed by natural disasters.
