How to manage stroke if it happens -Neurologist

A neurologist at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Dr. Olaleye Adeniji, has advised stroke patients to always seek psychological support and counselling, rather than suffer in silence.

He gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ibadan, in commemoration of the 2024 World Stroke Day (WSD).

NAN reports that WSD is annually marked on Oct. 29 around the world to raise awareness about stroke and its debilitating effects on humans, as well as offer suggestions on prevention and treatment of the condition, and ensure better care and support for survivors.

The 2024 edition of the global observance day has “Be Greater Than Stroke” as its theme, to encourage active lifestyle and community support to reduce the risk of stroke.

Adeniji, therefore, advised patients to work closely with their doctors, nurses and physiotherapists to get the best outcome, and comply with medications, which may be lifelong.

He added that “stroke is largely preventable if people are aware of the risk factors and take steps and precautions to treat them.”

He defined stroke as a disabling neurological illness that occurs suddenly and causes weakness of the arms or legs or problems with speech.

According to him, conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, low level of physical activity, smoking and alcohol usage can also cause stroke.

Other causes, he said, are: HIV infection, Sickle Cell Disease and heart diseases.

He explained that stroke can cause disability, depression, problems with memory and limitation of the individual from participating in daily activities.

He noted that “stroke prevention involves awareness and treatment of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases.

“People with these ailments should ensure they see qualified doctors to get appropriate treatment on time.

“People should be aware and check their blood pressure and blood sugar regularly, while those with family history of stroke should see qualified doctor to assess their risks of stroke and treat any conditions that may cause stroke.”

The neurologist urged government to prioritise treatment and funding of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes.

He advised individuals to strive to live a healthy and active lifestyle and maintain healthy weight.

“Stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake, consume more dietary fiber and green leafy vegetables,” he advised. (NAN)
