Regina Daniels, a popular Nollywood actress and wife of wealthy businessman, Ned Nwoko, says she was not aware of the cashless policy that caused a lot of problems for Nigerians earlier this year.
The cashless policy was introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to promote digital transactions and reduce the circulation of cash in the economy.
As part of the policy, the CBN redesigned some banknotes, such as the N200, N500 and N1000 notes, making them scarce and difficult to use.
Many Nigerians suffered from the cashless policy, as they could not access their money in banks or use it for their businesses.
However, Regina Daniels said in an interview with BBC pidgin that she did not know about the policy or the scarcity of cash, because she hardly uses cash for anything.
She said she only realised the situation when she posted a video on her Instagram page, showing off a bundle of new Naira notes that her husband had sent to her.
The video sparked outrage among many Nigerians, who accused her of being insensitive and flaunting her wealth.
Regina said she felt bad after seeing the reactions and deleted the video.
She said she did not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings or show off, but she just wanted to buy some food at a location.
She tendered apologies to those who felt offended by her video and explained that she was ignorant of the cashless policy.
