The Aba branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has refuted claims that controversial Nigerian lawyer and social media influencer Ifunaya Excel Grant, popularly known online as “Baddest Lawyer,” is one of its members.
The statement was released on Tuesday and signed by NBA Aba Branch Chairman Innocent O. Egwu, Esq., and Secretary Mazi K.C. Okoro.
“For the records, we wish to state clearly that Miss Ifunaya Excel Grant is not a member of the NBA, Aba Branch, and she is unfamiliar to NBA, Aba Branch.
“While we support every effort of our great association, the NBA, to purge the legal profession of the few bad eggs, we must request that careful efforts be taken by officers concerned to ensure that innocent and law-abiding practitioners are not mistakenly held out in bad light to the public,” the statement reads in part.
This is coming after some reports attributed Ifunaya’s NBA membership to the Aba Branch following the call for her to be prosecuted for alleged “inappropriate” social media conduct involving substance abuse and nude images and videos.
Suffice to say, there are several social media handles with Ifunaya’s appellation of Baddest Lawyer and same photographs bearing her semblance. Some of the Facebook walls host risqué photographs, while one doesn’t.
On a Facebook post on Thursday, August 24, 2023 in which she disowned some Twitter presence, she had written:
My official statement to the NBA And Nigerians. Please I’m not the one on Twitter I have never been in (sic) Twitter.
I have been silent for so long because I’m not the type to talk too much but it’s finally time I speak up & clear my name. Dearest @Nigerianbar I don’t bother anyone. I’m a model, actress and musician and all I do is live, mind my business and chase my dreams. Please, kindly leave me alone 🙏🏿 Thanks.
On Wednesday, she had accompanied a professional photograph with this caption on the same Facebook wall Ifunaya Baddest lawyer:
I worked hard for this and shouldn’t be taking away from me because we have only one life to live and if you’re happy you might live two.
Earlier in June on this particular Facebook wall, she had posted a photograph with the caption: “Virgin look, It feels Good to be a virgin,” which many of the followers responded to with mixed feelings.
