Ex-Senate President Ahmad Lawan has emphasized the pivotal role of girls’ education in driving Nigeria’s development and progress.
This was contained in an official statement issued today and conveyed though his Media Adviser, Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo, in honour of the International Day of the Girl.
Representing Yobe North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Lawan called for the rejection of harmful stereotypes that hinder girls’ progress and advocated equal opportunities in education and beyond.
He said, “Today, we celebrate the incredible strength, resilience and potential of girls all around the world. It is a day to recognize the importance of empowering girls and ensuring they have equal access to education, healthcare and opportunities.”
Highlighting the transformative potential of girls, Lawan also remarked, “Girls are the future leaders, change-makers, and innovators of our society. They deserve to grow up in a world that supports and nurtures their dreams, enabling them to reach their full potential without any barriers or discrimination.”
The Senator also urged Nigerians to join hands in promoting gender equality and removing obstacles that hinder girls’ progress. He emphasized the need to encourage their ambitions, nurture their talents, and provide them with the tools required to succeed.
Lawan also emphasized the broader societal impact of investing in girls’ education, saying: “By investing in girls’ education, we not only empower individuals but also boost the development and progress of Nigeria. When girls are educated, they become powerful advocates for change, breaking the cycle of poverty and contributing to a more just and equitable world/”
He also made a pledge to stand with girls everywhere, supporting their rights, dreams, and aspirations. He called for collaborative efforts to create a society where every girls can thrive, make her voice heard, and a become a catalyst for positive change in the society.
The International Day of the Girl is a global observance aimed at promoting girls’ rights and addressing the unique challenges they face; noting that his statement underscores the critical role girls’ education plays in Nigeria’s journey towards a more prosperous and equitable future.
