Lagos begins styrofoam ban enforcement

Today Lagos State government will start the full enforcement of a ban on usage and distribution of Styrofoam food packs.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the ministry of environment and water resources said enforcement officers from different regulatory bodies and police officers will visit shops selling styrofoam and confiscate them.

“I will like to appeal to all our traders to stop littering our market with wastes. We must segregate our wastes in our respective markets,” the commissioner wrote on his X handle.

The enforcement comes weeks after Lagos State banned the use of styrofoam and other single use plastics.

Authorities said the non biodegradable materials had polluted the environment and clogged drainage.

The bylaws stipulate that each building must have a blue and green bin for collecting plastic and other waste respectively. However, majority of buildings do not comply with the directive.
