A 78-year-old woman, who had gone missing from her family, was reportedly raped to death by one Jelili Lawal in an uncompleted building, a court heard on Tuesday.
The court was told by ASP Babatunde Ashifat, an Investigative Police Officer (IPO), that the defendant had offered to help the old woman find her way home on January 1, 2019, Daily Post reports.
According to the witness who was testifying for the Lagos State counsel, Ms Bukola Okeowo, the defendant had given the woman N500 and had boarded the same bus with her at Maryland in Lagos State.
He said that the defendant had lured the woman to alight at a bus stop and taken her to a bushy area where he assaulted and raped her at night.
The witness said that two ladies who heard the woman’s cry for help alerted a policeman on night patrol and the defendant was allegedly caught in the act.
He said that the woman, who had an ear problem, was bleeding from her anus and vagina and was taken to the Mirabel Medical Centre.
The IPO said that a medical doctor confirmed that there was a forceful penetration into the woman’s vagina and that she died due to excessive bleeding.
The IPO also said that he recorded statements of the victim and the defendant and visited the scene of the crime, which was bushy and abandoned.
The trial of Lawal for rape continues on October 27 before Justice Rahman Oshodi.
