NDLEA operative faces trial over Delta toddler’s shooting death

An operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) who allegedly killed a two-year-old boy, Ivan Omorhiakogbe, in Delta State, has been transferred to Abuja for trial.

The incident occurred on July 13, 2023 when the NDLEA operative fired shots at suspected drug dealers during a raid in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.

The bullet reportedly fatally hit Ivan and also injured his younger brother, Erhumossele, in the eye.

The boys were with their mother at her shop in a plaza when the tragedy struck.

Ivan was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, where he was pronounced dead, while Erhumossele survived.

The Delta State Police Command said it had concluded its investigation and handed over the case file to the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja for further action.

The Delta State Police Commissioner, Wale Abass, who confirmed this at a press conference in Asaba on Tuesday, October 10, said the NDLEA operative would be charged soon.

“We have done our part and transferred the suspect to Abuja for more detailed investigation and prosecution.
