Netizens mark 4/20 as unofficial weed-smoking day

Today is April 20, or, simply 420 or 4/20.

Beyond the figures, however, is an unofficial celebration designated as weed-smoking day. But how did an otherwise random day in April somehow became the haven of marijuana enjoyment?

Many theories have swirled over the years. While more exciting ones trace the holiday back to police busts or hidden messages in classic songs, the widely accepted origin is a little more reminiscent of a classic high school experience.

As explained by USA Today, “The number 420 itself has also come to be associated with marijuana and smoking and is often used as a colloquial term for the flower and the act of consuming it.”

In some developed countries, smokers see 4/20 not only as a day to kick back and celebrate their love of the stuff, but also to push for broader legalization and decriminalization of marijuana federally in the U.S. and beyond.

About 25 states in America have legalized marijuana use.
