Ugochukwu Orlandi, Nigerian-born American racing driver and son of New York-based Nigerian model, Oluchi Onweagba, has won the 2024 Macau Grand Prix. His mother, Oluchi, won the inaugural edition of the Face of Africa in 1998 and moved to New York thereafter.
Ugo, as he is fondly called, is said to have been the first American to achieve the feat in over four decades.
The 2024 Macau Grand Prix was a motor race for Formula Regional cars held on the streets of Macau on 17 November 2024. The race itself was made up of two races: a ten-lap qualifying race that decided the starting grid for the fifteen-lap main event. The 2024 race was the 71st running of the Macau Grand Prix, the first for Formula Regional cars and the inaugural FIA FR World Cup.
This is even as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the 17-year-old.
Taking to his verified X handle @PeterObi, the former Anambra State governor had tweeted:
Congratulations to Ugo Ugochukwu on Your 2024 FIA World Cup Victory.
It gives me immense pleasure to extend my warmest congratulations to the teenage sensation Ugo Ugochukwu Orlandi for his extraordinary win at the 71st Macau Grand Prix. This historic achievement, as the first American driver in over four decades to capture this coveted title, is a moment of pride and celebration.
Ugo’s outstanding victory stands as a testament to his immense talent, hard work, and consistent dedication—qualities that our youth today can demonstrate when given the right support and guidance.
With a Nigerian mother, the esteemed supermodel Oluchi Onweagba Orlandi, and an Italian father, the former fashion designer Luca Orlandi, Ugo embodies a rich and diverse heritage. His success serves as an inspiration to young Nigerians everywhere, illustrating the boundless potential that can be realized when passion is paired with opportunity.
I must also commend McLaren for their foresight in recognizing Ugo’s potential and for their ongoing commitment to developing young talent. Their support underscores the critical role of nurturing ambition and investing in the future.
Ugo, beyond making history—you have inspired millions. I look forward to witnessing your continued rise as you push the boundaries of what’s possible in motorsport.
Congratulations once more, Ugo!
