The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the fatal shooting of an innocent young man, Amuche Chinedu Edeh, in Nsukka, Enugu State.
The incident occurred on Sunday night on Echara Road, reportedly as a result of a dispute between plainclothes police officers and a club manager over a sex worker.
According to eyewitnesses, trouble began when one of the officers allegedly groped the sex worker while dancing with her in front of a bar, leading to an altercation that ended in the fatal shooting.
The Police are investigating the incident, but the officer responsible has not been identified, with sources suggesting a possible cover-up.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued by the Command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel, on Thursday night on behalf of State State Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu, the Command appealed for calm, assuring family and friends of the victim that justice will surely be served.
According to the statement, the commissioner has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a “full-scale, thorough, and expeditious investigation to unravel the circumstances of the alleged shooting and murder of one Chinedu Edeh “M”, by a Police officer at Echara Road, Nsukka, in Nsukka LGA., on June 23, 2024”.
Ndukwe said the commissioner has charged the deputy commissioner to ensure that everyone, especially the Police officer alleged to have shot the victim, found culpable faces the full weight of the law.
“The Commissioner has consoled the family and friends of the deceased, who was taken to the hospital and confirmed dead by doctors, with his corpse being deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“He urged them to maintain calm, assuring that necessary Police actions will be taken to ensure that justice prevails,” the statement read.
