First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has teamed up with other African First Ladies to launch the We Are Equal campaign and Zero Tolerance Waste Movement Agreement” hosted by the Organization of African First Ladies (OAFLAD), holding in Maputo, Mozambique.
In her speech as one of the guest speakers at the event, Mrs. Tinubu highlighted her commitment to these causes through her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), utilizing education as a transformative tool.
She said: “I have decided to use education as a tool to promote the OAFLAD campaign as this effectively aligns with the mission of RHI driven by my office to complement the efforts of the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Mrs. Tinubu also revealed plans to establish an alternative high school for girls, aiming to provide educational opportunities for those who drop out of schools as it resonates with the OADLAD focus of aiming to empower girls and provide them with a tailored educational approach that addresses their unique circumstances.
On environmental sustainability, she emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between the government and private sector. She acknowledged the progress in waste reduction and innovative recycling programmes but stressed that there is more work to be done.
“This synergy stands as a testament to the power of cooperating in implementing sustainable solutions on a large scale. But are we there yet? Not really,” she remarked.
She reiterated the Nigeria federal government’s administration commitment to the importance of engaging women in productive activities that contribute to socioeconomic development at the individual, community and national levels.
She notes: “Nigeria stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in bridging educational and economic gaps to promote gender equity. We firmly believe that empowering women and girls through education not only transforms their lives but also contribute to the overall progress of our nation.”
The event, held in Maputo, Mozambique, saw the President of the host country, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, declare the launch open with the First Ladies of Zimbabwe, Kenya, Botswana, and Malawi, in attendance with representatives from Rwanda and the Queen of Estwani.
