Soursop, scientifically known as Annona muricata, is a tropical fruit native to Central South America. Loved for its unique flavour and long-known health benefits, scientific studies have also spotlighted the potential medicinal properties of its leaves, particularly in the prevention of breast cancer.
Indeed, a 2012 study found that soursop leaf extract inhibited the growth of 50% of HeLa cervical cancer cells. This is even as a 2022 research states that study found that soursop leaf extract could stop the formation of leukemia cells. The researchers focus on the high level of antioxidants found in the soursop leaves.
Antioxidants are powerful compounds that protect the body against free radicals, unstable molecules that can cause cellular and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage, possibly leading to cancer.
By neutralizing these harmful molecules, antioxidants help maintain cellular health and reduce the risk of various diseases.
Online platform WebMD notes that soursop may also provide antibacterial effects. It referenced a study stating that soursop leaf extract may be able to kill many different types of bacteria, including strains that cause gum disease and cavities.
Another study found that soursop extracts may help to fight cholera and Staphylococcus bacteria.
Study says the process of making soursop leaf tea involves drying the leaves and grinding them into fine powder. A daily dose consists of mixing two tablespoons of the soursop powder with hot water, creating a refreshing and potentially cancer-fighting beverage, as well as antioxidants for a handful of other health conditions.
An oncology researcher, Dr. Ngozi Onyeka, underlines the importance of integrating soursop leaf tea into a wellness routine. She said, “While it is essential to remember that soursop leaf tea should not replace regular breast cancer screening or other recommended preventive measures, emerging research indicates that the antioxidants found in soursop leaf may contribute to reducing the risk of breast cancer.”
Caution
Onyeka adds, It’s also crucial to consult with your healthcare provider before adding any new dietary or herbal supplements to you routine, particularly if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.”
More scientific studies also note that it’s vital to remember that while soursop leaf tea shows promise, further thorough research is still needed to confirm its effectiveness in cancer prevention.
Also, as with any natural remedy, it’s wise to approach it with caution and moderation, instead of indulging in excessive consumption.
