The only time I experienced poverty was when I married my ex-husband –Iyabo Ojo

Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, has reminisced about her childhood, saying she was born into affluence so much so that when she experienced poverty later in life, it was initially fun to her.

Speaking as a guest on Toke Makinwa’s podcast, the mother-of-two disclosed that she never knew what poverty meant until she married her ex-husband.

She said, “When I went to my ex-husband’s house for the first time when we were still dating, I never knew there was face-me-I-slap-you houses.

“So, sometimes, don’t blame the rich when they don’t understand the problems of the poor because these children never knew exactly.

“If I never went to National College, I probably won’t understand what poverty is all about. I won’t understand why people are shouting everyday.

“In my house then at No, 2, Fawole Lane, Obanikoro, we had an industrial generator, I never knew there was anything like Up NEPA or Down NEPA because once the power went off, the generator came up in one second.

“My Grandmother was like one of the richest women in those days. I had a car to myself that took me to school and brought me back.

“The only time I experienced poverty was when I married my ex-husband. Initially, it was fun, it was an adventure.

“When I clocked 18, I had an account opened for me because my grandfather had done his will in a way that money was paid into our accounts as grandchildren, so I had money. You can imagine that as at 1997/98, I had over N100,000 in my account.”

Some social media users have reacted to Iyabo’s story, saying it might be untrue.
