Following the Supreme Court judgement on the autonomy of the local government areas, no fewer than 21 states out of the 36 states in Nigeria may, for now, forfeit the FAAC allocations for their Local Governments by July ending.
This is because the states are operating caretaker government.
Recall that among the issues resolved by the apex court are the following:
The court held that it is illegal for Governors to dissolve democratically elected Local Governments.
It ordered the Federal Government to henceforth withhold allocations to Local Governments governed by unelected officials appointed by the Governor.
The apex court barred the Federal Government from further paying LG allocations through the State Governments since the process has been abused by the governors.
The court stated that it is the local government that should receive and manage funds meant for local government.
The apex court ruled that the state government has no power or control to keep the local government council money or funds.
As it stands now, 21 states may not be able to collect LGAs allocation at the next sharing by July ending. The states are:
– Cross River
– Enugu
– Kano
– Rivers
– Jigawa
– Anambra
– Imo
– Kwara
– Zamfara
– Bauchi
– Plateau
– Abia
– Katsina
– Kogi
– Sokoto
– Yobe
– Ondo
– Osun
– Delta
– Akwa-Ibom
– Benue.
