President, Student Union Government at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Blessing Alims, has stated the reasons for appointing 50 aides to work her with her.
Alims won election to the position in June.
The aides comprised three personal assistants, one senior special adviser and 14 special advisers, in addition to seven senior aides and 25 others whose designations were not spelled out.
It may be recalled that a few days ago, Alims, who is the institution’s first female SUG president in the 49-year history of the tertiary institution, had announced the appointment via her Facebook page.
While announcing the appointment on Sunday, Alims had stated: “After carefully examining and assessing the following individuals based on their conduct, credibility, enthusiasm, transparency, and commitment to the Students’ Union Government’s progress and advancement, I am pleased to announce the following appointments for the efficient operation of Blessing_Alims_Led_Administration.”

Two days later on Tuesday, and following social media uproar about her action, Alims put up another post titled, ‘ADDRESSING CONCERNS ON APPOINTMENT, and stated:
Solidarity Greetings,
Thank you for voicing your concerns about the recent appointment of 50 aides by the Office of the Executive President, Students’ Union Government, University of Calabar. This press release seeks to address your concerns and provide clarity on the rationale as follows:
1. The Students’ Union Government is tasked with ensuring the welfare and progress of our entire university community. Just as a single tree does not make a forest, effective governance for a student body of over 42,000 requires a collaborative effort. It is essential to have a strong, and diverse team to implement our initiatives successfully.
2. With over 20 faculties and over 110 departments, the University of Calabar is a complex institution. The appointment of aides ensures representation from each faculty and department, which is crucial for effective student mobilization and governance. This approach allows us to address the unique needs of each segment of our student population.
3. These appointments are strictly voluntary and come with no financial compensation. They are designed to foster career development, instilling a sense of duty and motivation in the appointees. Each aide underwent a rigorous screening process by the Senate Committee, took an Oath of Office, and is eager to contribute their skills and creativity to the administration.
4. The selection process was merit-based, ensuring that each appointee brings valuable expertise to support the administration’s goals.
5. We are glad to know that some appointees have received commendations already from national and international organizations they volunteer for. This opportunity matters to our unique population because of its link to strategic community service.
Be rest assured that these appointments are well-considered and essential for our administration’s success. As we work be rest assured of our commitment to sharing our progress with you.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to advance the interests of our university community.
