The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, has stated how to bridge the generational gap between the youth and elders in politics.
Omotoso, a journalist and writer, was the lecturer at the 13th convocation of Caleb University, Imota, where he emphasised that bridging the gap is not just a goal but an imperative objective for Nigeria’s progress.
The commissioner advocated for increased youth involvement in political parties, parliaments, appointments, elections, and civic spaces, asserting it as a matter of right and part of the solution to Nigeria’s challenges.
Titled ‘Closing the generational gap between the old and young in Nigerian politics’ Omotoso’s lecture highlighted the importance of legislative actions, youth empowerment programs, and inclusive governance structures in driving significant transformation in the country.
He stressed the necessity for collaboration between generations, combining the wisdom of the past with the energy of the present to tackle future challenges effectively.
Omotoso debunked the notion that youths are leaders of tomorrow, asserting that they are leaders of today, urging everyone to recognize this reality.
Highlighting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s youth-inclusive cabinet in Lagos State, Omotoso commended their exemplary performances and the government’s commitment to youth empowerment through various sectors like agriculture, construction, technology, and security.
The promotion of an entrepreneurial culture among youth and the provision of support through initiatives like the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) were underscored as crucial steps towards economic empowerment and nation-building.
He further emphasised the importance of responsible leadership among youths, cautioning against irresponsible behavior that could hinder national progress. He also called for a repositioning of young people as agents of positive change.
