Women can beat age-induced infertility through egg-freezing, ovarian rejuvenation

In a bid to pursue their career or dreams, more Nigerian women are now freezing their eggs.

This is a transformation fuelled by the determination of Nigerian women to conquer their dreams and aspirations, putting their goals at the forefront of their lives.

A maternal-foetal medicine specialist at One Wellness Centre in Lagos, Joe Khalifeh, disclosed in an interview with Business Day, that Nigeria is witnessing a growing emphasis on social egg-freezing driven by significant societal changes where women increasingly prioritize higher education and careers before starting their families.

Speaking on the current trend of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in Nigeria, Khalifeh said that One Wellness has introduced a pioneering trend known as ovarian rejuvenation, which he said has set it apart in the field of fertility treatments.

How egg-freezing works

He explained that this innovative procedure aims to enhance fertility and extend the reproductive timeline for women, offering them more flexibility and control over their family planning.

What is egg freezing?
According to Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), egg freezing is one way of preserving a woman’s fertility so she can try to have a family in the future.

It involves collecting a woman’s eggs, freezing them and then thawing them later on so they can be used in fertility treatment.

The authority submits that a woman’s chances of conceiving naturally fall as she gets older because the quality and number of her eggs drops. As such, egg freezing can be an attempt to preserve fertility by freezing the eggs when the woman is young and the eggs are of the highest quality.

Commenting on the success rate of IVF in Nigeria and why it fails for some persons; Khalifeh explained that IVF success rates can vary due to several factors, including the woman’s age and the underlying cause of infertility.

He further noted that failures can be attributed to various factors, such as the quality of eggs, uterine issues, and the psychological stress endured during the process, which can impact outcomes.

“It is important to know that IVF, while highly effective, does not guarantee success, and multiple treatment cycles may be necessary. At One Wellness, our commitment to maximizing success rates includes advanced techniques, cutting-edge expertise, and comprehensive support for our patients throughout their IVF journey,” he said.
