EFCC allegedly abducts over 70 OAU students in midnight raid

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reportedly arrested over 70 students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in a midnight raid on hostels outside the campus.

Sources in Ile-Ife told The PUNCH that the officials stormed the Fine Touch and Superb hostels in Oduduwa Estate at about 2am and broke into rooms to arrest the suspects.

While reasons for their arrest is still unknown, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Abass Ojo, confirmed that the union has details of the 72 students picked up from their hostels with phones and cars taken away.

It was gathered that fresh and female students were among those arrested by the EFCC officials.

A former official of the SUG, Joy Abiola, also alleged that the arrested students were assaulted by the EFCC officials, who, according to her, carried out the operation from about 1:40am to 4:00am.

A video taken by one of the students showed young persons said to be students at the institution being marched into a white Hummer Bus, with some security officials hitting them and ordering them to move and enter quickly.

Another video also showed additional six vehicles alongside the white Hummer Bus on the move.

“How can you arrest people for owning iPhones, laptops, and cars?,” she queried.

When contacted, the head of Public Affairs Department of the EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Command, Olumide Egbodofo, said an update would be given on the raid soon.
