How to manage holiday stress

Holiday stress is bound to happen during this period, what with the rush to meet up with several responsibilities and family get-togethers amid the economic hardship.

While you may be forced to keep your spirits up and maintain a smile on your face during the holidays, it is better to be prepared to handle what is ahead, and to make the most of your festivities.

So, to reduce stress this holiday season, take these steps:

Be realistic with yourself and others: Make a list of what you expect from yourself, what others expect from you, and your responsibilities for the holidays so you do not regret trying to please everyone.

Plan your spending: Make a budget of what you need and stick to it. Do not spend unnecessarily to please everyone. Spending money on your loved ones is important, but don’t buy gifts that you’ll be paying off for the rest of the year.

It’s okay to say ‘No’: For many, the holiday season brings joy, but it can also bring more stress, so it is important to prioritise what brings joy (people or activities). It is nice to do things that will make others happy, but if that’s stressful for you, buy can politely say no to situations that stress you out.

Keep your regular routines: Routines help improve mental and physical well-being and can aid in overall resiliency. Continue to practice your morning routine or evening routine as much as possible if that is something that grounds you.

Share the responsibilities: It’s okay to delegate responsibilities or ask for help if you feel as though too much is on your holiday to-do list.

Walking or joggingGet moving: Maintaining activity in the winter is a vital tool to fight seasonal disorders and depression. So, get at least 20 minutes of moderate exercise four to five times a week. You can also practice slow-motion deep breathing to calm your nerves.

Take a break: Don’t forget about your own needs. Observe your siesta, read a book, or watch a funny movie. Laughing relaxes the whole body, and can relieve physical tension and stress. Remember, holidays are meant to be fun.

Avoid family row: Even the best families can drive you crazy, so before you pack your bags, think about conflicts that might pop up with your family.
