Last week, the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology [formerly the Ondo State University of Science and Technology], held its second convocation ceremony. Among the graduates, a young lady achieved an outstanding first-class grade of 4.79 out of 5.0.

Due to her exceptional academic performance, she was awarded the Overall Best Female Graduate, among others. Today, she is here to share her inspiring academic journey.

Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Rhoda Ayanfeoluwa Ojo. I am from Ekiti State, but I was born and raised in Ibadan.

What were your career aspirations while growing up, and what did you study at the university?
As a child, I dreamt of becoming a nurse. However, when the time came to choose a course of study, I prayed about it, and God directed me towards a different path. So I obtained a BSc in Agricultural Economics and Extension.

I was considered a failure During my primary school days, I struggled academically, and this continued until I reached JSS 3

You achieved a remarkable score of 4.75 out of 5.0. How did you manage to accomplish this?
I attribute my success to hard work and prayers. Interestingly, the person being celebrated today for her achievements was once considered a failure.

During my primary school days, I struggled academically, and this continued until I reached JSS 3. When the time came to enter senior secondary school, my parents decided to enroll me in a new school. It was there that I met a compassionate female teacher who guided and encouraged me to bring out my best potential. So, that was how my grades improved, and I became one of the best in class.

Listen to a voice clip of how poverty and deprivation nearly frustrated Rhoda Ojo’s academic pursuit:

What challenges did you face during your undergraduate studies?
My biggest challenge was financial constraints. Coming from a humble background, my parents had to take out a loan to pay my school fees. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough money left for other expenses. So, I couldn’t afford proper meals. There was even a day I ate eba and palm oil because that was the only food I had left.

Buying textbooks was also challenging, so, I relied on borrowing from my classmates. Sometimes, I couldn’t afford even the ₦100 transportation fare to school. It was really a difficult phase of my life, but I’m glad that God saw me through.

At what point did you stop struggling financially?
The first two years of my university education were extremely challenging. However, in my third year, I managed to secure a part-time teaching job, and was earning a meagre salary of N15,000. Despite the poor income, I saved up and bought a course on affiliate marketing. Thankfully, after completing the training, I started making sales online.

Additionally, during the COVID-19 lockdown, I acquired graphic design skills and improved my writing abilities. I also discovered various online platforms where I could offer my services and get paid. So, that was how my financial status changed. With the money I earned online, I was able to establish a cyber café on campus.

That’s commendable. How did you balance the requirements of your business with your academics?
I learned how to plan and manage my time effectively. Since I was determined to achieve success, I knew I had to pay the price of hard work. Another thing that helped me was my ability to multitask.

What awards did you receive during your convocation?
In addition to being named the Overall Best Female Graduating Student, I also received an award for being the overall best student in my department. In total, I received three different excellence-based awards.

While the Executive Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was congratulating me, I felt tears of joy streaming down my face. At that moment, I was so happy that my dreams had come true.

What motivated you throughout your journey?
My main sources of motivation were my faith in God and my belief in my own abilities. I also drew inspiration from the stories of successful people.

One of my favourite quotes is, ‘Against all odds, your dreams are valid.’ So, despite the challenges I was experiencing, I remained focused on my goals.

How old are you and what are your plans for the future?
I’m currently 21 years old and I intend to obtain my master’s and PhD degrees before I turn 30.

Like I mentioned earlier, I am also a writer. Currently, I have published books available on Amazon, and I look forward to writing more books and contributing to research in my field of study.

I’m also a motivational speaker. So, I aim to grab more speaking opportunities and positively impact the lives of young people.

What advice do you have for students who are facing financial challenges in school?
I understand that many students have dropped out of school due to financial challenges. So, while your parents are struggling to raise money for your education, look for ways to support yourself, too. You can get a part-time job or sell something to other students.

For those who are struggling to make good grades, dedicate your time to studying very hard. Believe in your abilities, surround yourself with positive influences and stay focused on your goals.

Success is not always immediate; but with consistent effort and a positive mindset, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve your dreams.
