I wasn’t wearing bikinis, yet TV houses felt my earlier videos were indecent -Tiwa

Award-winning Afrobeat singer Tiwatope Omolara Savage, professionally known as Tiwa Savage, says but for her ‘stubbornness,’ her music career wouldn’t have taken off in Nigeria.

Going down the memory lane, the mother-of-one said after she relocated to Nigeria from Britain, concert organisers were always rejecting her because they could not understand her dressing pattern. “My outfits were considered too risqué,” she said during a media encounter with BET, organisers of the BET awards.

The issue also led to the refusal of certain section of media to air some of her earlier music videos because they were considered indecent.

“When I first moved back, I would turn up at a show and they would say I can’t perform because my outfit was too risqué.

“It was a cultural issue. Even some of my first music videos were not played on the television because they were considered indecent. I wasn’t even wearing bikinis.

“Despite the setbacks, I was still stubborn. My dresses were getting more revealing. It was just getting worse. They were bashing me online.

“It was funny because the females were secretly falling in love with me and my style. They couldn’t deny it. My fanbase, my followers, was growing. So they had to put me on shows and play my music because there was a demand for it,” the award-winning singer narrates.

This is coming on the heels of another revelation earlier this month at the pre-launch Press conference that the inspiration for her debut movie, Water & Garri, came while she was drunk.

“I’ve said this before: this is an idea I had in my head when I was drunk in my room and when I brought the idea to my amazing team, they didn’t make me feel stupid.

“They just said this is a brilliant idea,” Tiwa stated.
