A baby allegedly sold for N800,000 by a nanny that was hired to take care of her has been rescued from the Alade Market in the Shomolu area of Lagos.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said, the baby was abandoned in the market as her buyers felt the heat of Police pursuit.
Over the weekend, it was reported that one Ruth Okezie who worked as maid for a family in Shomolu area of Lagos had absconded with her employers’ baby at about 2AM on Saturday, February 3.
The incident happened in Shomolu, Lagos; but Ruth was allegedly caught in Ikorodu, also in Lagos, after a missing person’s report was publicized on social media, and had confessed to abducting the baby and selling her for N800,000.
She could not immediately identify the buyer, reports said.
Confirming the rescue of the traumatized baby, Hundeyin tweeted on Monday [today], “Due to intense manhunt and pressure from the police, the buyer in the early hours of today abandoned the baby in Alade Market, Shomolu. Baby was promptly rescued by the police.
“The baby has since been handed over to her parents after they positively identified her.
“Efforts are still on to apprehend the buyer who is currently on the run.”
