UK court jails Nigerians, others for maltreating elderly patient

A shocking case of elder abuse has come to light after a hidden camera captured the appalling mistreatment of a vulnerable aged woman by four healthcare workers.

The BBC reported on Thursday that the four workers — Ame Tunkara, Morountaro Adefila, Danny Ohen, and Bridget Aideyan — have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from four to six months, after being found guilty of ill-treatment and wilful neglect.

The victim, an 89-year-old woman who suffered from vascular dementia and was unable to speak, was subjected to physical and emotional abuse by the workers, who were supposed to care for her.

The woman’s family, who had noticed bruising on her arm, had secretly installed a camera in her room and had recorded the shocking footage over four days in February 2020.

The footage revealed the workers hitting the woman with a pillow, roughly dragging her across the bed, and mocking her with cruel words. The woman was denied the dignity and respect that she deserved.

Sadly, the woman passed away in October, leaving behind a grieving family and a legacy of injustice. A police official said that the woman “should not have spent any of her remaining years suffering such ill-treatment.”

The case has sparked outrage and calls for better protection of the elderly and the vulnerable in the society.
