Why couples must share household bills -Kie Kie

Media personality, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, aka, Kie Kie, has advised couples to share the household expenses.

She said that a percentage-based division is better for respect, especially for the wife, and to prevent some problems.

She said that she and her husband pay the household bills equally because she does not want him to pay for everything, even if he is very rich.

The actress, however, said that on her birthday, she wants her husband to give her expensive gifts and trips.

Talking with OAP Toke Makinwa on her podcast, ‘Toke Moments’, the 33-year-old said: “That’s why when you are in a marriage; they cannot bring everything to you. I tell women this, how can you live in the house and not pay rent? For me o, it does not make sense.

“See, I live in this house; we share the rent. On my birthday, take me to Dubai, Barcelona; lovely. Buy me a Fendi bag or whatever; lovely. But that I live in this house and do not pay rent, it’s not possible.

“So that when we fight, you take the chair, I take the television. You take the roof, I take the floor. Then we share everything equally. You can’t tell me to get out of my house. No, that’s not how to be an adult.

“There’s nothing like get out of my house, we live together. Because living together is like cohabiting and you have to be responsible.

She also explained why sharing bills shows responsibility as an adult: “Imagine having a friend and then you have a chef, cleaner, dry cleaner. And your friend is just eating, throwing their plates and clothes everywhere in the house. And you’re cleaning after them; you’re paying for everything.

“No matter how much you love your friend, a time will come…it might not be financial. He might be stressed at work. And then you come home and someone is just lying there. And the AC is on, Netflix is on. And you’ll just be like, is this one mad, please leave. It just gets to that point.”

“So in marriage, I told my husband, it can’t happen that you pay all the rent and I live in this house?!

“In my house, someone pays for the chef, someone pays for the nanny, someone pays for the cleaner, someone pays for the dry cleaner; that’s how it’s done.

Toke said, “And sometimes when one defaults the other can help out”.

“Exactly”, Kie Kie agreed adding; “But you can travel out and buy me a gift of $10,000; lovely.

“But because you have the money, I will not let you take all the responsibilities. You see because there’s respect in doing o! There’s a lot of respect in it and that’s another challenge in marriage.”
