A massive protest erupted in Benin, Edo State, as the youths of the city expressed their displeasure over the presence of the controversial crossdresser, Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, aka Bobrisky, who had allegedly insulted their revered monarch, the Oba of Benin.
Bobrisky, who is known for his flamboyant lifestyle and gender-bending appearance, had sparked outrage last year when he posted a video on social media, joking that the Oba of Benin should come and marry him.
This was seen as a mockery and disrespect to the culture and tradition of the Benin people, who regard the Oba as a sacred and supreme authority.
The protest was triggered by the news that Bobrisky was planning to return to the state for an event, which many youths considered as unacceptable and provocative.
They took to the streets with placards and banners, chanting slogans and demanding that Bobrisky should leave their state and never come back. Some of the signs read: “Bobrisky is a bad influence; we don’t want him in our state” and “Respect our culture and our Oba; Bobrisky go away”.
