Movie producers denied me roles because, according to them, I’m ugly -Funke Akindele

Long before her breakthrough into movie world, talented actress and film maker, Funke Akindele, faced a lot of rejection and discrimination in her career.

According to her, the gods of Nollywood told her it was because of her appearance.

“I remember people telling me, ‘You are not fine. You don’t have ass. You don’t have boobs. You will not be in this film.

“And, I remember crying. A lot of times I would cry, break down, get into the bathroom and cry,” she said.

She said some people called her ‘ugly’ and made fun of her body shape.

She felt hurt and depressed by the harsh words of the film makers who denied her opportunities to showcase her skills.

She shared her painful experiences on Toke Makinwa’s podcast, Toke Moments, where she also talked about her latest mini series, She Must Be Obeyed.

She revealed that even in the Yoruba movie industry, she was not given much respect or recognition because of her looks.

She thanked Iyabo Ojo for being her support system and helping her get roles when others turned her down.

She said that in those heady days, sometimes she would only get minor roles that did not suit her talent.
